Obituary for Fred Marshall

Marshall; Fred WWII Vet.

Fred passed away suddenly on August 18 in his 98th year. Predeceased by his loving wife Shirley (nee McCracken)(1998) and daughter Marlene (1962). Loving Dad to Brenda (Don) Truscello, Carrie (Dan)Pust, Bill (Kim) and grand-dad to Dylan, Emily, Gary, Jaeden and Kyle.
At 19, Fred signed up for WWII and left Ceylon for Europe, where he became a sound ranger locating enemy guns. He came home without a scratch after “winning the war” and proceeded to land his dream job as a Conservation Officer, managing both wildlife and poachers. His job took the family to live in Alliston, Everett, Pefferlaw, Galt (now Cambridge) and finally, his perfect place in Massie, where he settled for 45 years.
Blessed with a long life, Fred enjoyed many interests, all connected to the natural world, from painting wildlife to fly fish tying to gardening; fishing, hunting and trapping. There wasn’t a tree leaf or animal track he couldn’t identify. And he enjoyed teaching the lore to children, nurturing their wonder at nature.
He also enjoyed watching cartoons with or without children, and was known for his sense of humour and wit. Fred was a master of the zinger long before it was even a word, as the dedicated, professional, warm staff of Rockwood Terrace can attest to.
We would like to thank everyone at Rockwood for taking such good care of our Dad, including his roommate Bob Goldsmith. For the year and a half Fred lived there, he (who himself had been a helluva good cook)
looked forward to every meal, enjoyed much fond banter, and appreciated the constant care that was taken for his well-being.
The deer around Massie are sleeping more easy tonight. He was also a helluva good shot. And a really good Dad.
A private family service has taken place and Fred was laid to rest with his late wife in the Flesherton Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be gratefully appreciated. Online donations and condolences at www.fawcettfuneralhome.ca 888-924-2810
